Dr. Patrick Michael Oates is a native Philadelphian and a product of the public school system of the city. He completed his undergraduate training at Tuskegee University in Animal Science and a doctorate at Howard University in Washington, DC in Physiology/ Molecular Endocrinology. After completing his Ph.D., Dr. Oates returned home to work in the pharmaceutical industry- initially with GlaxoSmithKline Pharmaceuticals, Aventis Pharmaceuticals in Bridgewater, NJ, Wyeth Pharmaceuticals as the Director of Infectious Disease, Global Medical Affairs and most recently with Cherokee Pharmaceuticals, a minority owned Life Sciences Company, as the Director of Government Affairs and Scientific Relations.
Dr. Oates believes that to whom much is given, much is required. He understands the importance of giving back to the community that has given so much to him. He has served on the board of directors of several community-based organizations such as the Columbia- North Y.M.C.A., Philadelphia Opportunities Industrialization Center, The Ivy Leaf Schools, the American Diabetes Association, and the Philadelphia High School Academies. He is the immediate past President of the Tuskegee University Alumni Club of Philadelphia and The Philadelphia Club, Frontiers International- a community service civic organization. . He serves on the Board of Trustees of The University of the Sciences of Philadelphia formerly Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and the Philadelphia Tribune Charities. Dr. Oates is an active member of Enon Tabernacle Baptist Church where he serves as the Chairman of the Community Re-Investment Ministry. Under his leadership, this fund has contributed more than one $1 million in the last four years to non-profit entities in the Philadelphia region, whose mission is to serve the disadvantaged. He is a member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc., Sigma Pi Phi Fraternity Inc., Alpha Boule, and the National Association of Guardsmen. Patrick has also served as; Chairman of the Marian Anderson Historical Society Foundation Gala Committee, a member of the Life Sciences Institute Board of Directors, a member of the Wistar Cancer Research Institute Leadership Board, a member of the Board of Directors of the Community Partnership School, and was appointed by Governor Edward G. Rendell to the Pennsylvania Board of Drugs, Cosmetics, and Medical Devices. Dr. Oates had the distinct honor of serving on the Philadelphia Fundraising Committee, the Pennsylvania Fundraising Committee, and the Mid-Atlantic Fundraising Committee for Barack Obama for President.
Dr. Oates is married to the lovely Evelyn R. Sample-Oates. They are the proud parents of two beautiful children, Andrea-Rose Sample Oates and John- Patrick Urias Oates.
